BBC CC snatches a tie from the jaws of victory

BBC Scotland put themselves in a strong position against the GU Staff last week with only eight balls to spare, but choked when presented with a golden opportunity for victory.

Having batted to only 103-5, Holmesy carrying his bat for 31 and David Blane offering an invaluable 27 off 13 balls, the prospects for any kind of result looked bleak.

What followed, however, was one of the best bowling performances displayed by this team, backed up with a committed attitude in the field.

All the bowlers contributed with Colin Moffat and Ani Vaidya both taking two wickets and Bharat Balani putting in a season's best 3-12 from five overs.

Matt Walmsley and Humprey Tauro also bowled well and in the field Gregor Dean took an outstanding catch on the boundary and followed it up with a run out. Alan Lawson, too, was quick off the mark.

All of which left GU Staff on 90-9 with only eight balls remaining, but six extras and a missed run-out helped them secure an unlikely tie on the last ball of the game.

Both sides will rue some bad batting, but as always it was a fixture characterised by excellent sportsmanship, not least with a last ball decision by Hugh Bell to reverse an erroneous No Ball that would have won the match for GU.

Honours even, but both teams will hope for better bottle as the season progresses.

BBC: 103-5
GU Staff: 103-9

MotM: David Blane & Bharat Balani
