BBC cricketers restore battered pride...on the golf course

Thursday's hugely entertaining end-of-season golf tie between BBC Scotland CC and GU Staff ended with an emphatic win for the Beeb.

Nick Rougvie and Jack McGill took on Hugh Bell and Frank Johnstone in a four-ball matchplay at the Cardrona course, part of the MacDonald Hotel and Country Club, near Peebles.

Despite a competitive opening few holes, the BBC boys pulled away round the turn and closed the match out on the 13th green with a 6&5 victory.

Frank Johnstone did his best to keep the GU pair in it, but was encumbered by the silver-haired chap who insisted on playing round with him.

"I've seen him hit cricket balls further," murmured Frank as another wayward tee shot found the trees.

In contrast, Nick and Jack dovetailed well despite not ever quite hitting top form, with Nick edging out Jack by a single point in the individual stableford competition: 28-27.

Frank finished 3rd with 24 points, but the official scorer lost Hugh's scorecard in the rough...somewhere near one of his drives.

Setting up the prospect a rematch, Hugh Bell was defiant: "It's only the second time we've lost as a pair," he claimed.

Perhaps Matt Walmsley might feel up to the challenge...
