A damp start to the season for the BBC

Last Wednesday saw BBC Scotland’s first playable competitive fixture of the season, after a very wet preceding fortnight. Spirits were however dampened by a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Hamilton Crescent/West of Scotland.

Fielding first, the BBC side included some excellent individual efforts in the field, but some excellent batting from Graham (53) and Dhillon (50), both of whom ended the innings with their wickets intact, meant that West finished their 18 overs 148-4. Strong bowling efforts from Qayyum, McGill and Hines were sadly not enough to halt the progress of the West batsmen. Hines took two wickets, and McGill took Wheel’s wicket for a duck with excellent reactions to secure his first catch from the season from his own bowling.

A strong batting display, quickly turned into a dynamic bowling spectacle. ‘Grandad’ Mellis, who recently turned 50, had an unfortunate lapse in form and managed 7 runs before being caught. McGill was run out with an excellent direct hit of the stumps. A disappointing golden duck (lbw) for club newcomer was followed by a duck for Qayyum. Greater figures are sure to follow from both batsmen, especially Qayyum who scored his first 50 for the club last season against Helensburgh. By the time the whole side was dismissed, McGill and Leithead were joint second-highest scorers, with Jose as the only batsmen who could walk off with his head held high with 26.

A similar effort in the field and a collectively stronger batting display will surely make future matches more competitive.
