Defeat at Kelburne - Match Report

Danny Rawling made a welcome return to the BBC Scotland ranks at Whitehaugh, chipping in with three not out, some neat work in the field and bowling two tidy overs late in the game without reward.

It was a heartening comeback for our answer to Ryan Sidebottom/Fozzy Bear but the fact that he was a live contender for our man-of-the-match, tells the whole story of a very one-sided contest.

Having made three consecutive scores of more than 150 – and winning two of those matches, BBC Scotland were brought back down to earth with a bump by some proper cricketers.

The visitors were all out for 82, 16 balls short of the allocated 20 overs.
Against an excellent bowling attack, the Beeb lads just could not get going and when opener Ewan Crawford became the first of seven batsmen to be clean bowled, the score had reached a mere 24 from eight overs.

David Holmes made a dogged 14, while David Blane (11) and Ani Vaidya (15) threatened to do some damage before falling to a ridiculous run out and a wild swipe at a blur of a full toss, respectively.

Having been culpable for Blane’s decline, Gregor Dean atoned with a score of 15, making the most of one charity over from a lesser bowler.

It was to be a nine wicket loss but at least the home side had to wait until the end of their 16th over to wrap up the win.

The bowling performance was good, with Colin Moffat still wondering how a ball that nipped between bat and pad in the first over didn’t hit the stumps and Dean beating the bat with thunderous pace on a number of occasions.

It must also be pointed out that Dean was responsible for the oddest moment of the outing when he was overheard describing his old pal Blane as a “truly beautiful 10-year-old”.

Rawling showed no signs of rust after a lengthy break and Blane claimed the one and only wicket with a corking straight delivery.

We were beaten by a far superior side on a wonderful sunny evening in Paisley and the game was played in good spirits, which made being taken back to cricket school that bit easier to take.
